FREE Green Book for Valley Families

http://www.50simplekids.com/

Together with the Rotary Club of Kern River Valley, we raised the money to buy a copy of this book for almost every family in the Kern River Valley with elementary school children.

Living Green Festival co-chair Jenny Hanley recommended the book The New 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth based on her experience as a school teacher and parent with the earlier edition. Packed with facts, experiments, and exciting projects to do at home and at school plus, now it has hundreds of eco-web sites just for kids!

We went out on a campaign to raise the money to buy one copy for every Kern Valley family with elementary school kids; perhaps as many as 396 families. The Rotary Club of Kern River Valley stepped up with $600 to start the fund-raising drive in a good way. With the help of donations from $3 to $600, local people have come forward so we bought books for almost EVERY Family in the Kern Valley with an Elementary School child FREE!

How will the books be distributed to Kern Valley Families?

First come; first served, one book per family (till we run out). To get their book, Kern Valley families will be asked to fill out a FORM indicating the grade levels and schools their kids attend so we can keep track. Attend the following events to get your copy of the free green book:

The Publisher, Andrews McMeel Publishing, generously donated a case of 48 more books to our effort.
Therefore:

  • All branches of the Kern County Library system will get a copy
  • as will EVERY elementary school teacher in the Kern River Valley.

Remaining copies (if any), will be distributed through the Kern Valley School Districts.

You can also buy the book through our Amazon.com Store. We get a small percentage; you pay the same regular price.

Living Green Mug & Water Bottle

Responding to input, we've added a 16 ounce insulated coffee mug with stainless interior and a BPA-free 'good plastic' heavy duty 32 ounce water bottle this year.

Thanks to our Living Green Festival Official Photographer Frances Bowman for the excellent photos.

Which plastic water bottles don't leach chemicals?

Because of 17 local sponsors, we can sell the Coffee Mug for $7 & bottle for $5 (both for $10) and still make a little money to pay for the expenses of putting on the all-volunteer Living Green Kern River Valley Festival. We'll have them at many local events & all of our events (till we run out).

GREEN EXPO

Last year's Green Expo

Saturday, March 26, 2011, 10am to 4pm

At the Family Life Center Gym at the corner of Sycamore Drive & Oak Street (1 block N of the main drag), Wofford Heights

Green Expo Exhibit booths feature complementary ‘green,’ ‘living green,’ &/or energy saving topics such as:
Recycling, Reuse, Alternative Energy, Energy saving, Sustainable building, Low-Water/Native Plant Gardening, Conserving Resources, Eating Healthy, Green investing among other Living Green & Simple Living topics. 2 local car dealers

A used car may be the greenest car you can buy.

Our Living Green mantra of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink might help us shake the urge to have a new car every couple years. Let someone else (like a rental car fleet or car leasing outfit) pay the huge initial $ depreciation a new car has. It used to be a sign that you were doing well to have a new car every couple years; now your car choice can show that you are a money-wise & environmentally sensitive driver. Grist Magazine’s Umbra Fisk’s On Hybrid Myths points out A used car, however, requires no new manufacturing impact. A used Prius would be the best of all worlds. Isabella Motors from Wofford Heights & Lake Isabella's Kern River Motors both will be at the Green Expo with high MPG used cars and a motorcycle (even better mileage).
