2012 Winners of the Youth Recycled Art Contest

Open to Kern River Valley students from preschool to Community College levels.

The Judges from the Kern River Valley Art Association just finished JUDGING in this year’s YOUTH RECYCLED ART CONTEST.

  • 25 kids in preschool through 8th Grade entered the contest.

The entries for the Youth Recycled Art Contest are on display in the Community Room at the Kern River Valley Branch of the Kern County Library, 7054 Lake Isabella Blvd., Lake Isabella (view map), through March 31, 2012. The KRV Branch is open Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11am to 7pm; Saturdays 9am to 5pm. The exhibit will close at 4pm on
March 31, 2012.

PRIZES & RECOGNITION

  • Preschool winners will get a pizza lunch at their Preschool as their prize.

Since we had NO entries from High School or Community College students in the Kern Valley, we’ve reallocated the prize money.

SO, ALL 25 entries from Kindergarten through 8th grade are WINNERS!

ALL 15 entries from Kindergarten through 8th grade will WIN a CASH PRIZE (1st, 2nd, 3rd place or Honorable Mention).

All 15 will also receive a Living Green Sports bottle and 2 dinners (1 for the winning child & 1 parent) for Friday’s Opening Awards Dinner 5pm, at Odd Fellows Hall, Friday March 16.

Living Green Opening Awards Dinner

5 to 7pm, Friday, March 16, 2012 | Odd Fellows Hall, 50 Tobias Street, Kernville

Dinner is Corned-beef & cabbage, with carrots, onions & potatoes cooked by renowned local chef, Bob Burkhart. A vegetarian option is available by special arrangement. Dessert is carrot cake. DINNER TICKETS: $12 (includes a raffle ticket); Kids $7) Drink included.

We thank the former officers & board members of the Nine3c community group for their generous donation of $225 to help underwrite the cash awards for this contest.

2011 Kids’ Recycled Art Contest Winners

In 2011, the KRV Art Association members Joyce Zvenia, Shirley Davis, Sandie Sparks & Jaye Lyn Martin made up the panel of judges. On Saturday, March 5, they reviewed all the arts submitted and awarded the following prizes to 10 children from the Kern River Valley:

Kindergarten through 3rd Grade:

  • 1st Place:      Lydon Sequoia Olivares “Birdhouse” Valley Oaks Charter School
  • 2nd Place:     Jakob Rudd “Flower Tile” KUSD HOPE After-school Program
  • 3rd Place:     Brendon Chadwick “Mom” KUSD HOPE After-school Program

Grades 4, 5 & 6:

  • 1st Place:      Megan Lane 10 years old   “Organic Farmer” Woodrow Wallace Elementary
  • 2nd Place:     Kory Clifton & Alex Meyer 6th Grade “Tea Time for Ladies” Wallace After-School Program

This year, there were no submissions from the South Fork School District, Kern Valley High School or Camp Erwin Owen High School. Last year (before Camp Erwin Owen High School Principal Denis Desmond retired, we had 50 submissions from young men at Camp Erwin Owen.

We thank the parents and teachers involved, especially the Kernville Union School District after school programs and the district’s Family Resource Center for their assistance in this year’s Recycled Art Contest and workshops.

D.G. Flamand Violence-Free Writing Contest Winners

Walker Basin Children’s author D.G. Flamand judged the entries and awarded Excellence Awards to three young authors from the Kern River Valley for their provocative essays:
